Young Engineers – Brighton & Hove and Mid-Sussex
Young Engineers provides young children with knowledge in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) basics using LEGO® compatible building bricks which are used to build kinetic models to demonstrate physics and mechanical engineering principles.
Target Audience
Our main focus group is primary-aged children but we could expand this to younger secondary school age groups and mainly anyone who is into building mechanical robotic models and thus any child with a aptitude for engineering.
Key Dates and Timings
Always required for ongoing clubs.
Specific Opportunity Details
We have after-school clubs running in 8 schools across Brighton and Hove including Brighton College and Brunswick Primary where we have 3 club sessions in each school with up to 200 children a week, and run holiday clubs where children from other schools attend.
We have tried to provide sessions for home-schooled (mostly SEN children) without too much success due to likelihood that, on any one day, we may have fewer than 5 turn-up due to anxiety etc. and yet we still have to pay for a venue.
We would like to have more schools since our programmes are extremely beneficial to children in terms of learning STEM subjects through application and problem-solving skills required to apply logic to problems and find solutions and especially for SEN children due to the level of focus required and the natural fit with such disorders.
Unfortunately, due to the need to have fewer children in every session, we are more expensive than most after-school clubs and struggle to attract the numbers that would if they could afford us.
This is especially true of home-schooling sessions as explained already. taking on a technology partner will help us grow to the benefit of more schools but also disadvantaged children who, at the moment struggle to attend our clubs for obvious reasons.
We already provide free places at several schools to help with this but we could do more with the right partner allowing more children to practice engineering at a low level.
Features and Benefits
Any marketing material would obviously mention the partner and how they help with most marketing at the moment being school newsletters and emailing, Facebook and Instagram but only within Brighton and Hove at the moment. We could also provide management team-building sessions.
Other Partners
None at the moment.
Investment
We’re looking for cash of any amount.
