Birmingham Arts School

Birmingham Arts School (BAS) is seeking sponsorship to connect schools and arts organisations – including music, dance, theatre and visual arts companies, venues and individual practitioners – across the City.

It works strategically with teachers, headteachers, artists and arts organisations to reduce inequalities for children and young people by engaging schools all over Birmingham with high quality arts education opportunities.

Target Audience

Children, young people, teachers and parents in Birmingham and the West Midlands.

Key Dates and Timings

Birmingham Arts School runs several events for teachers across the academic year. This includes:

– A total of 21 Teacher network sessions, three for Primary schools (9th October, 4th February and 8th April) 6 sessions for a Secondary Arts Network led by Jo Baptiste, Director of Community Arts at Bishop Challoner College, 6 sessions for a Secondary Drama Network led by Birmingham Rep and 6 sessions for Secondary Dance led by FABRIC dance company. These secondary sessions will take place in September, October, January, February, March and April. Each of these networks cost us £1000 to deliver.

– A Full-day Arts in Schools Conference with two keynote speakers, a panel discussion, workshops led by 9 arts organisations, an arts marketplace and lunch provided for all delegates. This will take place on Friday 25th October 2024. This conference costs us £8000 to deliver.

-We have a CPD programme, these are sessions that provide teachers with the opportunity to acquire new skills, gather teaching resources, and share these practices with their students. The programme covers all art forms and covers early years, primary, secondary, and special schools. They will be led by various dates from October 2024-May 2024 and led by the following Arts Organisations.

• Drama CPD (Primary/Special) Big Brum
• Drama CPD (Secondary) Stan’s Café
• Film and Digital CPD – Sangat Television
• Dance CPD One Dance UK
• Music CPD (Primary) –Ex Cathedra
• Music CPD (Secondary) – CBSO
• Visual Art CPD (Secondary) – IKON Gallery
• Poetry CPD – Writing West Midlands

This programme costs us £4000 to deliver

-One of the key issues in the city are the schools that are underserved in regards to arts provision. Using our cultural landscapes map https://bep.education/bas/cultural-landscapes/ we are able to identify schools in the most deprived areas of Birmingham and are able to see who is and is not engaged with the arts. We are actively trying to fundraise for workshops to take place in these schools to support these schools with their arts provision.

In 2024, due to funding from Esmee Fairburn and Arts Connect we developed the Proud to be a Brummie project, which involved 7 arts organisations working with 12 schools to deliver a series of workshops and a sharing to be performed at Symphony Hall.

For many of these young people it was their first experience of the arts and the outcome support their confidence, creativity and cultural capital. This project cost £30,000 to deliver, we would require funding to deliver such a project again so that we can support young people who can most benefit from arts intervention.

Lastly we deliver a BAS Celebration Event which is an evening to put a spotlight on Arts Education in the city. There are performances by school groups and a commissioned poet and 100 attendees.

There will be 10 award categories which include early years, primary, secondary, and SEN schools, hoping to inspire collaborations and creative initiatives citywide. The event aims to recognise the efforts of teaching staff, cultural learning staff, and young individuals who contribute to providing cultural experiences for young people.

The next BAS Celebration Event will take place in June 2024 and will take place at BCU. This event costs £5375 to deliver.

Below is what we call our impact ladder so those who can sponsor activity can see exactly how their sponsorship can directly support BAS activity.
