I’m Zaphaniah Bryan a 17 year old high jumper looking to get sponsorship for equipment/funding towards my athletics career. I have written a personal statement about my love of high jump and what I wish to achieve below.
To me, high jump is more than just a metric of height; it is a testament to the idea that limits are often self-imposed. Growing up, my parents instilled in me a deep sense of gratitude and the principle of never taking an opportunity for granted. They taught me that while talent is a gift, character is built through what we do with that gift. This foundation, combined with the privilege of a strong education, has fueled my dedication to both my academics and my athletics.
In a sport where height is often seen as a prerequisite for success, I have found my purpose in defying that expectation. Standing at a shorter stature (5’10”) than the typical elite high jumper, I have had to rely on determination, explosive power, and work ethic. My success on the bar is proof that technical mastery and discipline can bridge the gap where genetics leave off. I want my journey to serve as a message to other athletes: no matter your physical archetype, you belong in the sport you love.
My goal is to compete at the world level and attempt to represent my country on the international stage this year. Besides myself, I aspire to mentor younger athletes who feel overlooked because they dont look like a typical athlete. I want to be a living example that elite performance is accessible to anyone willing to put in the hard work.
