The Schools History Project (SHP) started in 1972, guided by our founding principles ( and has been a seminal influence on the way in which History has been taught in schools, both in the UK and overseas. Ideas pioneered by SHP including the use of historical sources, History Around Us (local history) and a commitment to diversity, are now mainstream. Our publishing output over the last 40 years is unmatched, and SHP textbooks and resources will be found in virtually every History classroom in the UK. We have hosted our annual summer conference at Leeds Trinity University since 1982 and this attracts hundreds of History teachers every year. It is not known as the ‘Glastonbury for History teachers’ for nothing. We have a mailing list of over 1500 teachers and a strong social media presence.
